The word careful, or a form of this word is frequently found in the Bible. It is, however,
very important to understand the context in which careful, carefully, or care is used. It can
suggest a very positive thing, or it might be used in a negative way.
In Philippians 4:6 we read; “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and suppli-
cation with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Here the context of
careful means “don’t worry or be anxious about anything. Just pray about things and leave
them with the Lord to work out”. The word, in this sense of its meaning, could be turned
around to mean “Don’t be full of care” about anything.
In Titus 3:8, the word careful is used in a very different way. Here we read; “This is a
faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have
believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and
profitable unto men.”
The context of careful in this passage has to do with “be very dilligent” to see that this is
done. It is kind of a command to very sure that they (we, Christians) are obedient and do
what the apostle is telling them (us).
